May 3 & 10, 2015 - First Communion and May Crowning
St. Anselm Celebrates First Communion
May Crowning in Honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary
On the Sunday mornings of May 3rd and May 10th, St. Anselm celebrated First Communion for children of the parish, both from St. Anselm Catholic Academy and St. Anselm School of Religion. Most of the recipients, who had participated in a two-year formation process, were in second grade. There were also some children in third, seventh, and eighth grades in the class.
The parents had presented their children at a Sunday Mass in September for a Family Commitment Covenant. The parents and the children both attended Faith Formation classes and were interviewed by the priests of the parish. All the students received First Penance in March. The catechists who facilitated the Faith Formation program under the direction of Brother Robert E. Duffy, O.S.F were Mrs. Maria Gambino, Mrs. Ann Lynch, and Mrs. Theresa Torre.
The pews in which the first communion recipients sat with their families at the 10 AM Sunday Masses on the 3rd and the 10th were beautifully decorated with banners created by the children and their parents as an expression of their faith and joy on the occasion of their first reception of the Blessed Sacrament.
With altar servers leading the procession, each First Communion Mass concluded with a solemn crowning of the statue of the Virgin Mary in the church garden on 82nd Street. The First Communion recipients, girls in white dresses and veils and boys in suits, assembled with Msgr. Maloney, our pastor, the priests of the parish and the Children’s Choir, under the direction Therese Panicali. A beautiful crown was place upon the head of the statue of the Virgin Mary, while the Children’s Choir, the First Communion class, and their happy and proud families sang hymns in honor of our Blessed Mother.
Congratulations to the children of the St. Anselm First Communion Class of 2015. Thank you to Brother Robert Duffy, Mrs. Maria Gambino, Mrs. Ann Lynch, Mrs. Theresa Torre, and the priests of St. Anselm Parish for bringing the children to this momentous point in their walk with Christ. A special thank you to the parents for having presented their children for Baptism, for having nurtured them in the Faith and for continuing to provide homes in which the love of Christ is enshrined.
Prayer Before Receiving the Body and Blood of Christ
Lord Jesus Christ
by the Father’s plan and by the working of the Holy Ghost
of your own free will you died
and mercifully redeemed the world
from sin and everlasting death.
I adore and venerate you.
Thank you for the good gift
of this holy Body and Blood,
which I desire to receive, as cleansing from sin,
and for defense against it.
