The Aumbry

On the north wall of the nave is the new aumbry for the display of the oils used in the sacraments of the church. Oil has been used since ancient times to anoint, in Greek – “chrism”, in religious rites, 1 Samuel 10:1, Jas 5:14. The gilded designs above the jars indicate the type of oil: the flame of Pentecost for Confirmation, the olive branch for the consecration of the church and altars, and the seashell with water for Baptism.
