The Thomas Dongan Council 1251 of the Knights of Columbus celebrated the installation of new officers before the 5PM Mass at St. Anselm on Saturday, October 14th. In addition, Stephen Gorton was installed as the Worthy Grand Knight for the next term. The Knights celebrated this event at St. Anselm due to Fr. Saffron becoming the Worthy Chaplain for the Council and its close proximity to the Council Home at 8122 5th Ave.
The Knights and their families attended the Mass as well leading the procession down the aisle. During his homily, Fr. Stephen provided a brief history of the Knights of Columbus, which began in 1882 as an organization that assisted immigrant Catholic laborers who frequently worked in dangerous jobs such as construction. Often the Knights of Columbus helped families who couldn’t afford to bury loved ones who died in workplace accidents.
Today the Knights of Columbus number nearly 2 million and continue their charitable work through their programs which include: the Christian Refugee Fund, Disaster Relief, and Coats for Kids. They also partner with Special Olympics, Global Wheelchair Mission & Habitat for Humanity.
