This year the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, October 4th, occurred on a Friday. But, in keeping with our well-established St. Anselm tradition, the parish held its much-loved service of the Blessing of the Animals on the Saturday closest to the feast – October 5th, 2024.
Following the conclusion of the 11am Mass, the pets and their people came to receive a blessing, reminding us of the importance animals have in our lives, not just for work and protection, but especially as companions. Fr. Ray greeted those gathered in front of the church and blessed all with words of prayer and the sprinkling of holy water. As Father Ray sprinkled the assembled dogs and cats, and their people, he spoke of the service and emotional support animals offer us.
Blessing themselves, parishioners and neighbors listened with rapt attention, though, perhaps the same cannot be said of our four footed friends.
We thank Fr. Ray for conducting the beautiful service, reminding us that we are all connected in God’s creation.
Good Saint Francis, you loved all of God’s creatures
To you they were your brothers and sisters.
Help us to follow your example of treating
every living thing with kindness.
Saint Francis, Patron Saint of Animals,
watch over our pets and keep our companions
safe and healthy. Amen
All the best,
The Saint Anselm Publicity Committee
